Can't get enough of madcap comedy or pure melodrama? Then the Myrna Loy and William Powell Collection is for you. The Collection includes five films: two dramas, Manhattan Melodrama (1934) and Evelyn Prentice (1934) , and three comedies Double Wedding (1937), I love You Again (1940), and Love Crazy (1941).
Myrna Loy and William Powell were the golden couple for MGM during the €˜30s and early €˜40s. We remember them for the Thin Man series, but this duo had a chemistry that sparkled no matter what the script. Although their films are not quite up to the superb Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn comedy outings (don't miss Bringing Up Baby), they do provide a glimpse into the glamour of the pre-WWII era without even a hint of the Great Depression that gripped the nation.
The costumes in each film are gorgeous. Did people in that era really dress that way? Hemlines were low. Women and men were never without hats in public, and rarely do we see Powell in anything but a suit and tie. For hardly any reason at all, Loy is togged out in a beautiful gown.
All the films in the collection are in black and white and none runs longer than 99 minutes. All are suitable for family viewing, although the younger children probably won't understand the nuances which enhance the films' brilliance.
Special features on each disk include a cartoon in color, an entertaining vintage short plus the theatrical trailer. The radio show of Love Crazy featuring Powell is on disk 5.
